Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Our staff will welcome you at the exit gate and assist with your transfer to the hotel of your choice. Rest and prepare for your adventure ahead.
Overnight: Hotel in Addis Ababa
Day 2: Fly to Mekelle – Explore Mekelle Tow
Early morning transfer to Bole International Airport and fly to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region. Upon arrival, meet your ground transportation and guide. Explore Mekelle town on foot, visiting Emperor Yohannis’ Castle and the museum dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives during the struggle against the Revolutionary government.
Overnight: Hotel in Mekelle or Axum/Abreha Castle area
Day 3: Drive to Degum – Visit Wukro Cherqos & Abreha wa Atsbeha Churches
Travel to Degum and begin exploring the magnificent Tigray rock-hewn churches. Visit Abreha wa Atsbeha, located 15 km west of Wukro, known as the finest church in the region. Continue to Degum Selassie Church in the afternoon.
Overnight: Camping at Degum
Day 4: Trek to Abuna Abraham, Debre Tsion & Yohannes Maequdi
Trek to Abuna Abraham church near Dugem, famed for its elaborate 16th-century murals and ceremonial fan from the 15th century. After lunch in Dugem, trek to Yohannes Maequdi, renowned for its well-preserved ancient paintings.
Overnight: Camping at Dugem
Day 5: Drive and Trek to Mariam Korker
Drive to Megab village, then trek to Mariam Korker, a rock church perched on a high mountain in Gheralta overlooking the village. Nearby is the smaller Daniel Korker church. Enjoy a picnic lunch and spectacular views over the Gheralta plains. Visit a local village, grinding mill, and experience a traditional coffee ceremony.
Overnight: Camping at Megab village or stay at Gheralta Lodge
Day 6: Drive and Trek to Abune Yemata
Drive 4 km from Megab, then trek 30 minutes to the base of the breathtaking Guh mountains. Climb to the spectacular Abune Yemata church, perched on a cliff face accessible only via rock footholds and handgrips. Enjoy a picnic lunch with panoramic views. Afternoon at leisure or visit the nearby village.
Overnight: Gheralta Lodge
Day 7: Drive Back to Mekelle via Sinkata
After breakfast, drive from Gheralta to Mekelle via Sinkata. Take a short 30-minute walk to visit the large Arbuta Insesa church with its deep domed ceiling and unique stenciled columns. Explore Medhane Alem Adi Kasho, one of Tigre’s oldest and most impressive churches with cathedral-like architecture. Visit Petros and Paulos and Mikael Melehayezenghi churches before heading to Mekelle.
Overnight: Hotel in Mekelle
Day 8: Fly Back to Addis Ababa and Departure
Morning transfer to Mekelle Airport. Fly back to Addis Ababa and connect with your international flight home.
